Fundraising for the rainforest

721 Challenge will be fundraising for The World Land Trust, an international conservation charity that protects the world’s most biologically significant and threatened habitats acre by acre. WLT funds the creation of reserves and provides permanent protection for habitats and wildlife.

“The money that is given to the World Land Trust, in my estimation, has more effect on the wild world than almost anything I can think of.”

- Sir David Attenborough

"Saving primary rainforest is one of the most important things we can do to combat climate change. 721 Challenge will be supporting the protection of vital habitats under threat."

Creating a nature reserve

Working with the World Land Trust 721 Challenge will be supporting the expansion of a nature reserve in Guatemala which contains some of the last remnants of a habitat under severe threat from logging and agriculture. Once completed the reserve will cover 4,000 Hectares of rainforest, providing vital protection for endangered species.

A home for threatened animals

A number of near threatened and endangered species live in the reserve area. The reserve expansion will provide vital protection for these animals.

Jaguar

Jaguars in the reserve will be protected from the threat of illegal hunting and deforestation.

Manatee

Protection from loss of habitat is crucial for near endangered animals like the West Indian manatee.

Baird’s Tapir

The reserve will provide a vital home for endangered species like the Baird\'s Tapir, the largest indigenous mammal in Central America.

Harpy Eagle

Harpy eagles are decreasing in numbers due to loss of habitat. They require an area of about 100 km2 for their habitat.

Neotropical Otter

These otters have suffered from hunting in the past, but providing more protected areas could allow their numbers to recover.

Other environmental goals

Assist companies who want to go green

Going green will be vital for companies who want to be forward looking. Backed by the World Land Trust Nick is going to use the 721 project as a platform for sharing the latest thinking and information to assist businesses in becoming more sustainable.

Do it on a plant-based diet

One of the most effective ways we can minimise our personal environmental impact is to reduce or eliminate our consumption of animal products. Nick has made the decision to undertake the challenge on an entirely plant-based diet.

Do the challenge Carbon Aware

Nick will be minimising his carbon impact using the World Land Trust’s Carbon balanced program, which enables individuals and organisations to offset their residual greenhouse gas emissions through the protection and restoration of carbon-rich wildlife habitats in the tropics.
